Thousands of people have flocked to Iceland after a volcano erupted near the capital, Reykjavik.
On Friday evening, lava began to pour out of a crack in Mount Fagradalsfjall, the first eruption of its kind in over 800 years.
The site was originally closed to the public, but from Saturday afternoon onwards, visitors were permitted to visit.
Ulvar Kari Johannsson, a 21-year-old engineer, told the AFP news agency, “It’s totally breath-taking.”
“It has a foul odour. The colours of the orange surprised me: they were much, much deeper than one would expect “he added.
